of the Wild Man.
This is a personal quest into the mysteries that inspired my childhood with a particular focus on the Yowie, Australia's Bigfoot. A labour of love since 2009/2010 -- no sponsors, no merchandise for sale, not cencerned about 'likes'.

Yowieocalypse (version 1) was of mixed success. It is sloppy and disorganised and much of it remains unfinished. Cryptozoology is a massive subject to tackle and I simply bit off more than I could chew.

However, I did succeed in getting to the bottom of a couple of Yowie cases (a rare feat, apparently), published online the first ever image of the enigmatic historical figure H.J. McCooey, and finding the earliest documented use of the word "yowie" in indigenous culture (I think). I was even once mistaken for a Yowie myself. Fun times...

Yowieocalypse (v2.0) will focus more on writing online articles which examine specific events and ideas in greater depth. Perhaps I'll even have a go at explaining the Yowie phenomenon. The latest information in things I find interesting will still be tracked and shared.

This is serious research, seriously! Enjoy...

Yowies Afoot!
7 February, 2021
Mr Carroll created Far North Queensland Yowie Research group on Facebook in 2019 after having multiple run-ins with large creatures he claims were yowies... “Even if 90 per cent of those (Yowie) stories are bull---, 10 per cent of it is still real and that’s enough for me.”

How did a close-up of an out-of-focus ambiguous shape in the background of the original picture become a recognisable face complete with eyes and visible gritted teeth?

On the Trail of the Yowie
12 January, 2021
That a Bigfoot-style creature currently does not rampage across Australia should be our default starting assumption and is hardly an interesting revelation. What is interesting, and also useful to know, are the reasons that the belief exists.

Cultural Continuum of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Practices
???, 2021
In more recent times those ‘Hairy Men’ are known as ‘Big Foot,’ ‘Yeti,’ ‘Yowie, ‘or ‘Abominable Snowman.’ In contrast the ‘Hairy Man’ is quite short in stature and is said to live along riverbanks. To a non-indigenous person these stories sound like fiction, myth, or legend. However, to myself and other Aboriginal people who have had experience in encountering the ‘Hairy Man,’ they are very real, and this demonstrates the very different relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the natural world as opposed to the way non-Indigenous people view the world.

Invisible or ignored: investigating the lack of thylacine-based material culture in the Australian archaeological record
27 February, 2021
This absence of thylacine-based Indigenous material culture is conspicuous, especially since the raw materials such a large mammal provides would be useful and thus their depiction in art but absence from “things” appears significant.

The Wildman of China: The Search for the Yeren
March, 2021
It concludes that the yeren is not an unidentified or elusive animal species, as some have proposed, but rather that stories about the wildman probably originated in early encounters of the Chinese with bearded European peoples. In fact traditions regarding the wildman in China can be traced back to the Qin dynasty when Chinese first encountered Greeks in the Far East and, unfamiliar with their hairier physical appearance, originated stories about a semi-human being.

Bigfoot bounty grows to more than $2 million
3 March, 2021
State Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, said it doesn’t matter that his legislative measure never made it out of committee. It did exactly what he intended it to do — promote interest and tourism in his heavily wooded district in Southeast Oklahoma that reportedly boasts the ninth most sightings in the world of the legendary ape-like creature.

5 March, 2021
[M]any people claiming to have had a ghostly experience didn’t necessarily see anything that most people would recognize as a classic “ghost.” In fact they may have had totally different experiences whose only common factor is that it was not easily explained.

Plano residents have been reporting Bigfoot sightings all over town. Here’s why
24 March, 2021
The reports of Bigfoot sightings across Plano are not part of some strange conspiracy theory. They’re the result of one man’s effort to draw attention to his race for city council — and give people a few laughs along the way.

31 March, 2021
Living organisms such as plants and animals shed DNA into their surrounding environments as they interact with them. In recent years, eDNA has become an important tool to help scientists identify species found within different environments.

eDNA, Footprints and the Biological Bigfoot: Comments on an Interview With Jeff Meldrum
April, 2021
I’m in full agreement with the interviewers (and not with Meldrum), then, that the difficulty he faces and has faced is therefore a reflection of the persisting lack of good evidence: what’s been presented so far, what exists so far, still doesn’t cut it. Which – if the ‘biological bigfoot’ exists – is problematic.

Drop bears target tourists, study says
1 April, 2021
Volker attributes this selective behaviour to a number of factors, the most significant of which relates to Australian people’s taste for Vegemite. “By-products of the interaction between chemicals found in Vegemite and those found in human sweat repel drop bears,” Volker says. “Most Australians eat Vegemite at least once a day, so they permanently exude these chemicals through their skin and are thus protected.”

Aman Tuleyev — one of President Vladimir Putin’s longest-serving regional leaders — has copped to arranging bogus sightings of the yeti to attract tourists in Siberia, East2West News reported.
Tuleyev, 76, who was governor of Kemerovo Oblast from 1997 to 2018, ordered a tall bureaucrat to wear an Abominable Snowman outfit so he could be spotted in the bushes by visitors to the cash-strapped Siberian region.

California Indians calling it 'Bigfoot' in the 1860s / “Death Valley Days” featured a hoax
18 April, 2021
Indians were shown the footprints and asked if they knew who made them. They were wise and shrugged their shoulders and said, “Heap no see,” “Call him Bigfoot,” “Nobody see him” … with a wave of the hand toward the Inyo Range, they said, “He live there.”
In 1956 “Death Valley Days” aired an episode entitled “Mr. Bigfoot,” in which giant footprints appear outside a
California mining camp.

“None of Gilroy's alleged Cryptid footprints look at all like real footprints. I think they've been created by human hands. If you compare this alleged track to real fossil Dinosaur footprints you'll see that Gilroy's one looks totally fake, artificial, superficial and lacking in any and all detail. Same goes for the yowie prints he purports to have cast, by the way.”
